How to help California Fire Victims

This week’s wildfires in California hit especially close to home. Winspire, based in South Orange County, California, has many friends and partners in affected areas across the state.

Tragically, upwards of 40 people have lost their lives. In Paradise and Butte County, Northern California, more than 111,000 acres have been burned in Camp Fire, considered the most destructive fire in state history. Another 88,000 acres have been scorched by the Woolsey and Hill Fires in Southern California, affecting Ventura County cities like Malibu and Thousand Oaks. Thousands of evacuees are waiting to return to what’s left of their communities and survey the extent of the damage.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of life, health and property for all victims of the wildfires, and our hearts and condolences go to those impacted.

5 Ways to Help Victims of the California Wildfires

The Center for International Disaster Information reports that sending money is typically the most efficient way to help, as volunteers on the ground are able to delegate funds to the most urgent needs.

Here are 5 options to support immediate, mid- and long-term relief.

1. United Way of Greater Los Angeles

The L.A. branch of United Way is raising money for low-income residents in areas affected by the Woolsey and Hill Fires.

2. North Valley Community Foundation

This Chico (Butte County) nonprofit is raising money to support organizations sheltering evacuees of the Camp Fire, including churches, fairgrounds and community centers.

3. California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund

The foundation has offered grants to those affected by wildfires for 15 years. Causes include rebuilding homes, funding medical treatment and providing financial and mental health assistance after the life-altering trauma of being affected by wildfires.

4. Humane Society of Ventura County

The Humane Society of Ventura County is accepting donations to help animals displaced by the Woolsey and Hill Fires. They are open for those who have been evacuated and in need of sanctuary for dogs, cats, horses or other domesticated animals.

5. Individual GoFundMe pages

GoFundMe has set up a page of verified California fire relief fundraisers. The funds will go toward reopening schools, rebuilding homes and purchasing supplies for individuals and communities who have lost everything.
